DJ PIED-PIPER:

"Men have a lot of pride - but we shouldn't be ashamed to ask for help. CALM can offer support to all young men. Not everyone's a rock - talk freely. We all need to express ourselves"

CHILTERN FM DJ, STUART COULING:

"There are so many men around who bottle things up because they feel like they have no one to talk to. I think pride often keeps them from discussing what's on their minds. It's OK for women to go out with their girlfriends and chat about everything. Men aren't supposed to go down the pub and talk about personal stuff. It would be better if we did. I was one of those men in my early 20's who bottled things up and wished there was someone like CALM around then. That's why I am 100% behind CALM."

A year has passed since the calm campaign launched in Bedfordshire. Luton at large has supported the campaign and has been at the forefront of delivering the calm message to the people of Luton.

Calm is a campaign to raise the awareness of depression among young men, working with the music, sport and entertainment industries to encourage young men to 'open up'. The campaign launched in Bedfordshire May 23rd 2001. To date the helpline has offered counseling and advice to 30,000 callers of which 55% have been in the 15-35 year old target group.

The calm (campaign against living miserably) press conference was held at the newly open Liquid nightclub with support from Radio One and Cream DJ Judge Jules, locally born poet John Hegley and DJ Swan-E. An evening party followed with the public launch at Euphoria 23rd May 2001 with support from Soul Sense DJ's Jonny G and Davy G plus an opening set from DJ Nappa of local Hip-Hop crew Phi-Life Cypher. Other DJs playing on the night were Cyus and Swan-E.

Over the past 12 months local co-ordinator Neil Hannah has continued to work with nightclubs, bars, DJ's, promoters, record shops, radio stations, student unions - the list goes on; to spread the calm message and break the stigma surrounding depression and young men. Neil explains: " Its been a eventful and successful year for calm in Bedfordshire and I would like to say a very special thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign over the past year without you it wouldn't of happened"

Throughout the year the campaign has been involved with some of the biggest promotions the county has seen; Garage Fever @ Enigma, Bedford, Raise (DBR) at Euphoria, the Filmstock International Film Festival and many other events.
